Daily DVIR vs Detailed DVIR: which one do you need?

Daily covers the §396.11 fields a DOT officer wants to see. Detailed adds defect-tracking columns for fleets that need the audit trail. Here is how to choose.

What Daily DVIR covers

Driver name, tractor number, trailer number, odometer, date, the §396.11 checklist (brakes / lights / tires / coupling / etc), defects section, driver signature, mechanic signature. Hand it to a DOT officer at roadside without explanation.

What Detailed DVIR adds

Per-defect columns: defect description, action taken, date repaired, mechanic ID, parts replaced. Designed for fleet maintenance teams that need the audit trail across multiple vehicles and shifts.

Quick rule

Owner-operator with one truck: Daily DVIR. Fleet with 5+ vehicles or a centralized maintenance shop: Detailed DVIR.
